On 27 June, 1989, the foreign ministers of Austria and Hungary stood in a field near the western border town of Sopron. In front of the international press, the suited politicians, Alois Mock and Gyula Horn, carrying unwieldy bolt cutters, proceeded to clip through the barbed wire fence – the “Iron Curtain” that had separated their countries for over four decades. Last Saturday, 20 years later, dignitaries from around the world came to participate in the Hungary’s official celebration of the “opening of the Iron Curtain”."
