The Budapest Times - Hungary‘s leading English Language source for daily news: "Border guards stood and watched as some 660 East German citizens fled to the West on 19 August 1989 during the Pan-European Picnic at Sopron in Western Hungary. The event was organised by members of opposition political parties and the International Pan-European Union. The patrons of the event, reform communist and Hungarian politburo member Imre Pozsgay and Otto von Habsburg (former heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, then Pan-European Union president and a German MEP) - at the request of Prime Minister Miklós Németh - did not participate."
