Where the Iron Curtain fell in Sopron, Hungary | Lori Henry: "In 1989, hundreds of East Germans ran through north western Hungary on their way to West Germany, crossing over just north of Sopron*, Hungary. Here, the Hungarians and Austrians had agreed to open their border for three hours in a symbolic gesture of peace. This was the chance for East Germans to cross the Iron Curtain and, even though the guards were supposed to shoot anyone fleeing, they did not get involved.
