Most people who passed by machines dispensing mineral water took the drink for free rather than contribute to a charity, while 40% made the voluntary Ft 50 donation during a three-week test conducted by Sopron Bank in Budapest.

It was not compulsory to put coins in the vending machines, but organisers said that by not paying the “shopper” would deprive the Csodalámpa Foundation, which helps sick children.
