However, on Thursday the tables were turned on Poland as Hungary beat them 4-2 in Sopron, the visitors leading twice but conceding goals in the last three minutes to Anita Padár and Fanny Vago's penalty. The Enemy Within: Angela Merkel's Fight to Hold on to Power - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International: "Political turmoil, disorder and revolutions are anathema to Merkel. On a Wednesday in August, she is standing on a lawn in the Hungarian town of Sopron. It was here that, exactly 20 years ago, Hungarian border guard Arpád Bella allowed more than 600 East German refugees to push their way through an old gate and into neighboring Austria -- a key event in the fall of the Iron Curtain.

The Budapest Times - Hungary‘s leading English Language source for daily news: "The foundation had already held an event in Sopron in August to mark the 20th anniversary of the Pan-European Picnic. Foundation director Hans Kaiser emphatically denied that the foundation was the only German political body with such an active part in the anniversary celebrations due to the role played by CDU politicians at the time. “No, our involvement is, above all, connected to the fact that these are major events of German history,” Kaiser told The Budapest Times. 'The events of 20 years ago are a good example of what courageous people can achieve if they take action,' he said. Kaiser also rejected 'the creeping tendency' of putting the border opening in Hungary, which brought freedom for tens of thousands of GDR citizens, on the same level as the emigration of the Prague embassy occupiers a few weeks later."

SLAM ONLINE | » Markus Carr: Ballin and Business in Europe: "At one of my camps I met a person who happened to be the president of a company that specialized in fundraising for capital enterprises and nonprofit organizations. This person began to help me advance my youth program and reconstructing the business plan. This was my first exposure to business plans and the idea of running a business for success. I developed my youth basketball program and somewhere in-between that mission, I developed this hunger to return to the professional game. At the time I could have settled for a position with 501club Inc. or my youth program, but I decided to hand over my youth program to my friends and reject the offer to work for the company to come back to Europe. It was a major pay cut but a decision I felt would benefit me in the future. So, now I’m back in Europe. During this [most recent] season I was playing with a team in Sopron, Hungary, which is only a 40-minute drive from Vienna."

Sopron or Ödenburg? by James O'Fee - Impala Publishers Blog Page: "Careful readers of the Impala blog may have noticed this comment added to Tuesday's post by a Hungarian reader -
Please use the city name Sopron. Nobody use Öedenburg in this time. This is an old, 'historical' name for Sopron.
I have been quoting the account of published in 1854, whose author, Merle d'Aubigné, uses mainly the German names. Merle d'Aubigné, or his translator, writes Œdenburg, where I suspect that the Œ is an attempt to represent the German Ö in English (the German 'O-umlaut' may be written as 'Oe' as well). Today the use of o and e, written with a ligature as a single letter, has dropped out in English.
'Hungary' as a political entity did not exist in 1854. It was merely a 'geographical expression'. Emperor Franz Josef, or rather his Russian allies, had crushed the Hungarians and their hopes in the 'War of Independence' of 1848-9. The Austrian Habsburgs ruled Hungary as their direct personal property and used German as the official language. It was only in 1869 that the Emperor granted Hungary 'Home Rule'."

The picnic that brought down a vast empire
The picnic that brought down a vast empire: "The date was August 19. The place: Sopron, a sleepy provincial town in western Hungary. Even in such a backwater, the winds of change were blowing. In Hungary, a new generation of reform-minded communists had taken charge. Almost overnight, they wrote a US-style constitution and began speaking openly of a free press, free markets and free elections. Emboldened, a small group of local Sopron activists decided to celebrate the new spirit. Their modest aim: put up some tents, hire a brass band and let the beer and good vibes flow. One of the organisers came up with an especially inspired idea - to briefly open a gate through the barbed-wire frontier to Austria, allowing people to casually stroll back and forth across the border for the first time in four decades. They called it the Pan-European Picnic."

History News Network: "Every great event has its hidden turning points. Victory in World War II, some say, hinged on Operation Fortitude, Britain's legendary gambit to fool Hitler into thinking the Allied invasion of 1944 would come near Calais rather than the beaches of Normandy. Similarly, the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War had their roots, in part, in a bold gamble that unfolded, all but invisibly, one fine summer day in 1989 on the Austrian-Hungarian frontier.

The Chosun Ilbo (English Edition): Daily News from Korea - Hungary Marks Anniversary of Beginning of Collapse of Iron Curtain: "Hungary is marking the 20th anniversary of its decision to allow tens of thousands East Germans to cross the Hungarian border and flee to the West. It was a risky decision that contributed to the collapse of the Iron Curtain and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Former refugees from then-communist East Germany and aid workers still recall the often traumatic experiences that preceded the mass exodus to freedom.

Frankfurters. Hamburgers, and bonners | Manila Bulletin: "German Chancellor Angela Merkel celebrated a 'Pan European Picnic' with Hungarian President Lazlo Solym this month to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hungary's decision to allow East GermanS to walk across to the West unhindered by border patrols. That decision would be the beginning of the end of the Iron Curtain and would lead to the crack of the Berlin Wall.

Editorial: The day the Iron Curtain parted » Knoxville News Sentinel: "Now, as The Associated Press has reminded us on the 20th anniversary last week of a picnic that had hugely unforeseen consequences, that all changed in 20 seconds. That was the length of time Hungarian border guard Lt. Col. Arpad Bella took to have his men stand aside and allow hundreds of East Germans to cross into Austria and freedom.
The border was to open briefly to allow a Hungarian delegation to cross for a 'Pan-European Picnic' with an Austrian delegation to promote friendship and celebrate Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's new policy of glasnost, or openness."

Memories of 1989 - fm4.ORF.at: "I traveled to Burgenland shortly after the exodus of East Germans in the summer. Most people were pleased and happy that tensions along the border had eased to the point that in June of 1989 Austrian Foreign Minister Alois Mock and his Hungarian counterpart, Gyula Horn, had symbolically cut the barbed wire fence along the border. This symbolic act had actual consequences as it led to the organization of an event known as the Pan-European Picnic, which was held close to the border, and which East German vacationers were urged to attend. Leaflets promoting the event were distributed around Lake Balaton, a favoured destination of East German tourists."

The field of Euro dreams - Europe, Travel - The Independent: "The previous summer, I had spent some time in the lovely Hungarian town of Sopron. Its history is as intricate as anywhere in central Europe. As the Roman city of Scarbantia, it lay astride the Amber Road, an important trade route between the Baltic and the Adriatic. As either Ödenburg or Sopron, depending on whether the Austrians or Hungarians were in charge, the city prospered in the Middle Ages. Sopron had the good fortune to be just out of range of the Turks' 16th-century excursions into central Europe. Its Gothic and Baroque core survived the squabbles between the imperial powers."

The Reformation had taken early root there, as proved by the auto-da-fè of heretical books under Louis (Lajos) II i.e. before 1526, the year of the Battle of Mohács where King Louis died. In 1557 an Evangelical High School was established in Sopron. Several young men went to study in Wittenberg."

Assistenzeinsatz: Fekter will Bevölkerung befragen « DiePresse.com: "Ich wohne im Burgenland - genauer gesagt in Eisenstadt.
